I know people have mentioned the a620 and the a700 but i have been looking at getting the a620 until i heard that the a700 is coming in the next few weeks. i know that the 700 is 6x vs the 620's 4x and apparently the 700 is going to be cheaper at list price. should i wait for the 700 or go ahead and get the 620?

I have the same exact issue. The A700 does not have the swivel screen. And I wanted that. However, I think I will wait till the A700 comes out so that I can examine both cameras. I myself do not know which one is better.
Moreover, is the A700 even really a replacement for the A620?
What camera is better?

I'm going to guess that the grip of the A620 will feel better in my hand than the A700. The larger grip in the A620 is caused by having the two extra batteries.
6X zoom is nice, but I already get more blurry indoor pictures with 4x zoom if I use my hands to hold the camera when taking pictures.

If the iso 400 has been improved and the iso 800 is usable the A700 might be an option to consider, btw.. have they upgraded the sensor in the A700? other than that i don´t see a reason to go for the A700 and i hope it´s not a replacement for the A6#0 since the new A700 seems to be more like a downgrade but we should wait until the reviews and samples

What are iso 400 and 800 good for? Low light shooting? I don't think the A700 is a replacement for the A610/A620 because it doesn't have the swivel LCD for one thing.

well it really seems like A700 isnt a replacement for A620 overall.....as the A700 over here is sold cheaper then the A620.... about some €50 difference......
was looking for A620, A700 or S2 IS.....seems like A700 isnt well liked :(

I wonder how long the time between shots using flash in A700 since it only uses 2 AA batteries just like A520 and A510

I was looking to buy A620 for my sister then along came A700. I wonder why Canon releases 2 almost similar cameras.
A700 may have some dandy features over A620 but the only thing appealing (or maybe useful) to me is ISO up to 800; but shots at such higher ISO is still unproven. As Screenclutter mentioned, 6x optical zoom will be blurry without IS. And A700 doesn't have swivel LCD....
So my sister got her A620 last week.

i asked the person at canon why was the A700 cheaper then the A620 and why the battery usage difference when A700 is suppose (technically speaking 620<700) to be better... his reason was that A700 manufacturing and mechanism is better and more advanced, hence requires to use less batteries and production cost is also cheaper then A620.

I don't think ISO800 is a good reason to buy a digital compact, even ISO400 is too noisy and non-usable. 6x zoom? What good it's not coming with an image stabiliser?! 2,5" screen but the same number of pixels as in A620, also no swivel LCD (also lots of scratches on the LCD). 2 batteries instead of 4 so let's say it's a lighter camera but still too big to be a pocket camera.

If higher ISO on this compact is as useful as that on Fuji F10 then we will be on to something.

A700
I thought it DID have ISO?
I also am reading that it suffers in low light becuase of smaller sensor?
Is the lens on the A620 better? why else would more mps and more zoom make pictures not as great as the 620?

man oh man, i got this dilemma too... a620 and a700 is a very close fight and i can't decide which one best serves my needs. i really don't mind that a620 has a higher resolution - what i'm after is quality. i saw this post t dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canona700/page13.asp) and this guy's comparing shots from both... not much of a difference (although the a620's shots are slightly better because of the difference in exposure, and you can see the difference in compression by its file size). right now, i am leaning towards the a700 because of it's awesome 6x optical zoom (i know... call me a sucker) and it's few bucks cheaper, and i honestly think that at the same settings, both cameras are almost identical ... i can always retouch my shots after, which i do most of the time anyway... what you guys think?

 I thought that the A700 was like a A540 but better screen, 6x zoom lens etc but it is nearer to the A540 than the A620 surely?
Both the A700 and A540 share one major downsided compared to the A620/A610 they may only need 2 batteries but flash recycle times are reaaaalllllllly slow and thats where the 4 batteries comes in
I think I may wait for the new A620 replacement in mid August check my thread,
Cheers

I would go with the newer canon cameras because when i compared my S2 and my S3 the glass on the S3 is better.

yeah, that's one of the reasons why i'm leaning to the a700 - it was released april 17, 2006 while the a620 was released november 4, 2005. they both got optical viewfinders (when making nightshots) but the a700 has a 2.5" screen, as opposed to the 1.8 swivel screen that the a620 has. the a620 has slightly better shutter speed but the a700 has a slightly better sensitivity/ISO range... and the list goes on. but as pchomer said, a620 may have a replacement mid august... so i'm going to hold on to my hat til then... my camera phone )although 1.3MP) is crappy... and every day, it gets easier to be swooned by these lovlies... what to do, what to do... hohoho ^_^

If I where you I would go with the A620. Slightly better image quality and has four batteries. I actually see the 6x as a slight downfall with the A700 because there is no IS with that camera. Many people that I have talked to say it’s too hard to take a pics at 6x with out an IS option on the camera. I still have fun with my old A75 and that’s the same body style as the A620 except for the flip out LCD. Also the ISO 800 is a pointless option on the A700 in my opinion.

Well i think if it has ISO 800 that just means the lower ISO settings will have less noise right? if it goes to ISO 800 then it has a little better CCD right? The more i think about it the more im leaning twards teh A620 also. I find myself using the swivel LCD more and more on my S2 and S3.
Since im in a wheelchair there are positions i cant get in to take some shots, the swivel LCD helps me get higher or i can extend the camera out and shoot with one hand. The 2.5 LCD is great but if you cant see it, it doesnt help.

you guys have a very very good point... still, i can't get over the fact that a700 is still a good camera...arrrrgghh! anyway, i guess i'll just wait for the a620 replacement... for now, i'll have to stick to my camera phone... i had a vivitar 5340s a while back (got it dirt cheap...), but quality was not even close to decent, so i ditched it, and with the money i got from selling that, and some savings, i will be buying a new one - mid august is quite near anyway. i would like to get my hands on something like a d2x or something of that caliber... but hey, who am i kidding :D
any of you guys have an idea what its going to be like (the a620 replacement)? anybody here connected with canon? i hope it's got the similar or better quality as the a620 but has IS, 6x opti, etc... (or am i dreaming too much... lol) :D

well according the the board talking about the release of the a620 replacement the A810/820 or whetever it will be called will be announced in mid august or very early september but it seems the camera won't be out until november.
if i had to guess as to what the replacement will have I could guess that it will have the 6x optical zoom and with that canon better as IS since people seem to hate the A700 they probably can see one reason is that the zoom is too much for the camera without IS. also at this time in digital cameras an LCD under 2.5" is small so they will probablt up it to at least a slightly larger screen it seems people want that. of course the camera will have newer technology I am assuming. (I hope they keep the color swap feature I would like to toy with things like that) it seems the canon A620/610 is one of few camera now that is not a camer with a huge lens but that can have a conversion lens adapter and such. so in other words it is a camera that is right in the middle of things not professional or a basic super compact thing. I just wish they would announce new cameras sooner in advance surely they must spend over 2 months creating it and making enough to supply the masses. oh well i just hope you can wait until november because the A620 came out novemeber 5, 2005 according to another post on the board.
sorry for going around in circles and off track and stuff I hope this post is understandable.

I dont think im gona wait, i waited about 6 months for the S3 to come out and i just now got one i put about 4K images on my S2 waiting for the S3
Im just gona get the 610 then maybe upgrade later.
No matter what you get there will always be somting better. If you just keep waiting you will wait for ever and you will wind up never getting anything.
Even like an A510 IMO it takes good pictures and they are around $100. new.

yeah that is true. I just relized I only really plan on taking pictures on trips/vacations and since I have no clue if i will even have a vacation or trip on spring break or during next summer I should not even be planning on getting a digital camera yet since I might get the 610/620 upgrade not use it and then next year a better camera comes out and i could have just waited for it to come out instead of buying a camera that is not inferior and basically unused. so I think I will stop planning on getting a digital camera until I know when my next vacation is.

lol, thats a good idea. Just wait till you need it and then during the whole vacation you have your head in the manual. You just got it so you wont know how to use it and all your pictures will come out bad. lol
That would be my vacation... :o
I just put a little over 4K pictures on my S2 and its just starting to get broke in. Im just now learning how to take good pictures with it. The S3 is the easiest transition so far since its so close to the S2 with the little things the S2 is missing its comming along nicely.

I am sure I will know if I will have a vacation in spring break or during the summer more than a couple days before it happens.

I woldnt worry about it really i guess is what im saying. When i first got into digitas like a hobby i got an A60 and i used it for a while and i learned how to scroll threw the menus and how it all worked then i got an A70 and everything was basicly the same. Then i got an A510 new and again there wasnt much difference in how it worked i didnt really have to read anything in the book to get some great pictures. Its like as the canon cameras progress they all work the same but the menus just get a little longer. How they function stays the same from unit to unit and the transfer is so easy. Now i have an S2 and an S3 and again when you use it, it just feels like the first one with more options opened up. I was a little overwhelmed at first because there were so many things added to the menu and i didnt know what they all did or if ide need them but i found they just help you take more creative shots. Thats the hobby side of it i guess.
If you get a basic canon camera and learn it then decide to get somthing better you wont have to relearn everything. You just have to move over to the better camera and learn where the buttons are. Maybe other cameras like sony or panasonic are the same way? Ive tried sony but i liked the quality of the canon, and how the menus worked, they seem to flow better.
I kinda like having 2, one that is small and pocket size to bang around and one to get serious with. attachments, filters, extra flash, stuff like that.

oh. well persoanlly I do not think i want to go that far with lenses and such but I do want a nice camera that has body. all of these ultra compacts and compacts are so tiny and like .8 in in depth. how can anyone hold that I am skinny and could probably only put one finger on the top with something like that and they make the screens so large that there is no room to grip at all.
oh and I did the math and I do believe that a 2.5" lcd in the canon A620 is pheasable. however the viewfinder would have to be moved a bit further to the right probably.
oh btw can you please explain to me why people want the optical viewfinder I mean I have tried looking in my old 35mm film camera and found looking in the optical viewfinder to be hard. besides you don't get exactly what the viewfinder shows you get what the lcd shows right? some cameras it seems don't even show the whole umage in the optical viewfinder but only like 77% of the true photo.

For me i use the viewfinder the most, i wondered why i would want to use it at first then i realized when its really brite outside it can alter the LCD dusplay and you sometimes dont see it at all. With the viewfinder its always a consistant image because no light can get in. It also helps you steady the camera. When you push it to your face that gives you 3 points of contact against your body to keep it still. Ive tested it and it helps me alot. Ive tried holding it out infront of me using the LCD, then against my face usign the viewfinder and im better using the viewfinder
